Sure, Jeff Bezos shot himself into space today; but want to hear something that’s even more out of this world? The Simpsons may have already predicted this billionaire space race, back in 2014. Yet again, the Fox animated series has written history years before the events have even taken place. In an episode of the long-running series, a famous billionaire (the one who beat Bezos to space, in fact) lounges miles above the Earth, watching from above.
The Amazon and Blue Origin founder launched into space for a whopping ten-minute flight today, breaking ground in the commercial space travel industry. He traveled with his brother, as well as both the oldest and youngest people to ever fly into space. Sounds like a daring mission — but he wasn’t the first billionaire to do so. English business mogul Richard Branson beat him by just over a week, soaring into space on July 12.
And The Simpsons is being credited with predicting Branson’s journey. The scene in question is from the Season 25 episode “The War of Art,” which features an animated version of Branson reclining and looking at a painting while floating in a spacecraft. Branson may not have been looking at a painting in real life, but the images sure look similar — take a look below.
Viewers of Branson’s flight were quick to note the similarities to The Simpsons. “How can The Simpsons show predict every Damn thing?” one Twitter user exclaimed.
To be fair, this episode of The Simpsons was released a few years after Branson founded Virgin Galactic, with the promise of sending tourists to space, so it’s not exactly the show’s most mind-bending manifestation.
Bezos’s featured turn on the series had, um, a less luxurious vibe. Although the series didn’t predict his launch today, a handful of Twitter users pointed out that it still seemed like something from the show.
“Branson, Bezos, and Musk are spending billions of dollars just so that they can have this conversation from a Simpsons episode,” one user tweeted, sharing a quote from a conversation about folks heading into space.
If Elon Musk is really next in line in the billionaire space race as mentioned above, well, guess what? The Simpsons already predicted that in 2015. We’ll just have to wait and see if it actually comes true.
