The second installment in the Narcos universe is finally coming to an end. Today Netflix announced that Narcos: Mexico Season 3 would be the franchise’s last installment. The 10-episode season is set to premiere on November 5 and will center around an all-out war.
If you remember, Season 2 ended with the arrest of Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo (Diego Luna), the head of the Guadalajara Cartel. Well, when it comes to this corrupt world, you can’t just lock up one guy and call it a day. According to a longline from Netflix, “Set in the ’90s, when the globalization of the drug business ignites, Season 3 examines the war that breaks out after Felix’s arrest. As newly independent cartels struggle to survive political upheaval and escalating violence, a new generation of Mexican kingpins emerge. But in this war, truth is the first casualty — and every arrest, murder and take-down only pushes real victory further away.”
Remember how the Cali cartel emerged in the wake of Pablo Escobar’s death? Yeah, it seems like TV history will be repeating itself. This new season will see several returning faces. Scoot McNairy will reprise his role as DEA Agent Walt Breslin, and José María Yázpik will return as Amado Carrillo Fuentes, the longest-running series regular in this franchise. Additionally, Alfonso Dosal, Mayra Hermosillo, and Manuel Masalva will play Benjamín Arellano Félix, Enedina Arellano Félix, and Ramón Arellano Félix, respectively. Gorka Lasaosa will return as Héctor Luis Palma Salazar, and Matt Letscher will play DEA Agent Jaime Kuykendall. And you better believe that Alejandro Edda will be back to embody our new big bad, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.
But this wouldn’t be Narcos without some new faces. Luis Gerardo Méndez is set to play series regular Victor Tapia, a Juarez cop with a moral dilemma; Alberto Guerra will play series regular Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, an independent drug trafficker; Luisa Rubino will play series regular Andrea Nuñez, a young idealistic and ambitious journalist; and Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, aka “Bad Bunny”, will guest star as Arturo “Kitty” Paez , a member of Ramon Arellano Felix’s gang called the “Narco Juniors.” You read that correctly. Bad Bunny is going to play a Narco Junior. Truly, this show has given us so much.
Though Season 3 will be the final season of Narcos: Mexico, that doesn’t mean the series is over for good. The original Narcos ran for three seasons before it switched its setting from Colombia to Mexico. It’s entirely possible that this franchise could switch to another drug trafficking hub in Latin America. It could even expand to the rest of the world. After all, there are a million drug lord stories out there, and Narcos has proven it’s great at telling them all.
Check out the action-packed final teaser above and get ready for a bloodbath. This period of history certainly isn’t for the faint of heart.
