Jeopardy! contestant Matt King broke new ground on the game show last night (Nov. 23), but he’s probably not all that happy about the news. That’s because the competitor finished with one of the lowest scores of all time, finishing up the episode with a whopping -$6,400 in his bank. He may be named Matt, but he’s certainly no Matt Amodio!
King, a lawyer from Lewisville, Texas, managed to start the game pretty strong last night. Past contestants have struggled with the football category on the show, but this was King’s strong point. He quickly snatched $2,400, but finished the night with eight correct responses and 10 wrong ones. That left him in a deficit, meaning he was ineligible to compete in Final Jeopardy.
“Matt, I’m afraid you took your swings,” said guest host Ken Jennings. “That’s a strategy. It didn’t always pay off. You were close so many times, but we’re gonna have to say goodbye to you here. You’ll finish in third place with $1,000.”
While it would be easy to bash on King, Jeopardy! viewers took a liking to his playing style, commiserating with him from their couches at home. “Matt went down swinging,” one Twitter user shared. “I have to respect that.”
Some fans even wondered if King’s negative score was a record low for the show. “I wonder what the largest deficit someone has faced after Double Jeopardy,” one user shared. “Matt just ended with -$6,400. Can’t say I remember seeing too many with a bigger one than that.”
The lowest recorded score on the show actually occurred just this past summer, as guest host LeVar Burton took the stage. Contestant Patrick Pearce finished the game with -$7,400, breaking contestant Stephanie Hull’s previous record of -$6,800 from 2015. King’s score last night was low enough for him to tie for third place alongside 2012 Christy Gibson.
Contestant Amy Schneider ended up winning again last night, extending her hot streak into a fifth win — meaning she’ll head to the Tournament of Champions this year. Tonight, she’ll go for her sixth win.
Jeopardy! airs weeknights on ABC at 7/6c.
