Okay, get this: what if you took the concept of Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead — mixing a heist movie, with a zombie movie — and took out the twist? Then you’d have Army of Thieves, a new movie set in the world of Army of the Dead, which is just a heist movie, with no zombies. Yay?
The good news is that the prequel stars and is directed by Matthias Schweighöfer, the break-out star of Army of the Dead, who reprises his role as delightful safe-cracker Dieter in the new trailer that just premiered as part of Netflix’s TUDUM virtual event. You can watch the trailer above.
The synopsis for the movie is pretty straightforward: “In this prequel to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, small-town bank teller Dieter gets drawn into the adventure of a lifetime when a mysterious woman recruits him to join a crew of Interpol’s most wanted criminals, attempting to heist a sequence of legendary, impossible-to-crack safes across Europe.” And though the movie does promise to be zombie free, there’s still some bubbling of the infection that shuts down Vegas in the first movie happening in the background.
Though Netflix’s viewership numbers should always be taken with a grain of salt since they’re based on two minutes of viewing data, the streamer revealed earlier this year that Army of the Dead was watched by 75 million households in its first 28 days on the platform. That must of caused Reed Hastings a huge sigh of relief, because Army of Thieves, as well as an anime series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas and a live action sequel were already in various stages of development.
Army of Thieves also stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan, Jonathan Cohen, with a screenplay by Shay Hatten, based on a story by Zack Snyder and Shay Hatten. The movie is produced by Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Wesley Coller, Dan Maag, Matthias Schweighöfer, and will premiere on October 29, 2021, which is my birthday, so happy birthday to me! Netflix got me a zombie-free heist film. Thanks, Netflix.
